Washington Capitals Goalie Injured in Game 3 and Today an Update

April 29, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

Logan Thompson injured

The Washington Capitals face some uncertainty in between the pipes in their first-round 2025 NHL Stanley Cup Playoff series versus the Montreal Canadiens. News emerged that goalie Logan Thompson got injured and left Game 3 on Friday night. Thompson is currently listed in today’s update as a game-time decision. In addition, as we prepare for tonight’s Game 4, Washington leads the series, two games to one, over the Montreal Canadiens.

Logan Thompson Injured in Game 3 vs Montreal Canadiens

Thompson left late in the third period of Friday night’s 6-3 loss to the Habs. The 28-year-old goalie had a collision with teammate Dylan Strome. Washington’s goalie couldn’t put any weight on his left leg and had to be helped off the ice.

Thompson wasn’t the only goalie to get injured in Game 3. Montreal netminder Sam Montembeault left with 8:21 into the second period after reaching for the back of his left leg. Furthermore, Montembeault was replaced by Jakub Dobes, who picked up his first Stanley Cup Playoff victory.

Thompson had been solid in the first two games of the series. Case in point, he recorded a .951 save percentage and a 1.47 goals-against average. The Calgary native had made 30 saves on 35 shots before exiting the game. He made a case to be part of the Team Canada roster for the Four Nations Face-Off. However, Canada did not take Thompson ultimately. Perhaps it was a bit of motivation for a big year in the American National Capital.

What It Means

This isn’t the first time that Thompson has dealt with an injury. Moreover, he missed some time towards the end of the season, but wasn’t rusty in the first two games.

Washington will turn to backup Charlie Lindgren for the near future. Lindgren has been the team’s backup this season. However, he has post-season experience. He was the starter in last year’s series against the New York Rangers.

Lindgren hasn’t played a lot as of late, but is a solid second choice in goal. The veteran goalie has formed a solid partnership with Thompson. Montreal has a chance to even up the series, but Washington has won plenty of games with Lindgren in goal.
