It’s time for another round of NHL rumours for Thursday. We’re closing in on the March 3 trade deadline and plenty of players could be moved. However, today’s NHL rumours talks about one that could stay put. The Montreal Canadiens might be a seller at the deadline, but one player may not be moved. Today’s NHL rumours talks about how unlikely a Jonathan Drouin trade is.
All NHL rumours come from the original source and are subject to change.
Jonathan Drouin Trade Unlikely
Rumour: TSN’s Eric Macramalla said that it’s not likely that the embattled forward will be traded at the deadline. Macramalla didn’t completely eliminate the idea of Drouin being dealt, but its more of a no than it is a yes. Drouin isn’t the only Canadiens player that may stay in Montreal.
I’m reading that Jonathan Drouin could be moved by the trade deadline. That seems highly unlikely.

It’s not been a pleasant few seasons for Drouin in his hometown since being traded from the Tampa Bay Lightning. The 27-year-old has yet to score a goal in 31 games this season for the Habs. His best season with the Canadiens was when he netted 18 goals in the 2018-19 season. However, injuries and other factors have caused him to struggle. He did score six goals last season, but has yet to light the lamp this campaign.
Could a Jonathan Drouin Trade Still Happen?
Drouin might see more opportunities in the lineup if Montreal does make some moves at the deadline. His $5.5 million contract comes off the books and the end of the season and he becomes an unrestricted free agent.
It’s likely a team waits for July 1 to take a chance on him with a low-risk, low-money contract. He could be an interesting reclamation project for a team that could shore their bottom-six forward group. However, he probably plays out the string with the Canadiens and moves on. A change of scenery could be just the tonic for the young forward that was the third overall pick of the 2013 NHL Draft.
