Montreal Canadiens Interest In Winnipeg Jets Forward May Have Reignited

June 26, 2022 by Last Word On Hockey Leave a Comment

Pierre-Luc Dubois move

As previously reported, Pierre-Luc Dubois has notified the Winnipeg Jets that he will not be committing to the club long-term. Instead, the forward has stated his intention to test free agency. Dubois is currently a restricted free agent with arbitration rights. Therefore, the possibility of a trade and sign partner could be an option for the Jets. A Pierre-Luc Dubois move could be in the cards.

Pierre-Luc Dubois Linked With Montreal Move

Per Marco D’Amico of Montreal Hockey Now, it appears that the Montreal Canadiens are still an interested party in the 24-year-old. Dubois has long been linked with a return to his home province. The rumours began when he requested a trade from the Columbus Blue Jackets and have resurfaced as he becomes a pending-RFA.  Now, it is reported that the Habs may once again take a look at acquiring Dubois.

What This Means

It is easy to see Dubois’ appeal to the Canadiens. As noted above, he is a Quebec native and bringing in a francophone player is always welcomed in Montreal. A talented top-six center, his two-way play and elite skillset would go some way to replace the gaping hole left by Phillip Danault, who left last summer in free agency. He is not afraid to utilise his big frame in the form of hits and imposing on the opposition. This makes him a great modern power forward. He is also greatly versatile, able to provide cover on the wing.

However, as noted by D’Amico, bringing in Dubois will come at a cost, perhpas too high. Montreal have two first round picks and it is likely Winnipeg would want the Calgary Flames’ 26th overall pick sent to Manitoba. Along with a pick, the Jets would likely want their pick of the Habs’ prospect pool and an NHLer. Not only is this package quite large for a rebuiliding side, they would have to tie him down with to a long-term deal. With plenty of young talent requiring pay rises in the next few years, Montreal may simply only be window shopping right now.
