Montreal Canadiens Former Top Five Pick Out for Four Weeks

September 27, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

News broke this morning off an injury to Montreal Canadiens defenceman David Reinbacher. A broken hand will keep him out for reportedly four weeks. The 20-year-old received the injury in Thursday night’s preseason game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

David Reinbacher and His Injury History

Montreal selected the young defenceman fifth overall in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft. Injuries have plagued the Austrian’s development since then. He suffered another injury in October 2024, once again during a preseason game against Toronto. That injury required surgery in his left knee, which kept him off the ice until February of 2025. Reinbacher began playing with the Laval Rocket, Montreal’s American Hockey League affiliate. In 10 games with the Rockets, he scored twice and recorded three assists for a total of 5 points. In the playoffs, Reinbacher had two goals and four assists for six total points in 13 games played.

What It Means

Luckily, the defenceman should only miss the first two weeks of the season. Hopefully he will be able to hit the ground running when he is ready to play again. A broken metacarpal bone isn’t an injury that should impair his ability to condition and get ready for when he can make a return.

Seemingly, Reinbacher was going to start the year in Laval. And the young man just needs to play games. when he can get a full season under his belt, we’ll truly be able to see what the young man can do. Canadiens fans have patiently waited on seeing what this young man can provide. A fan of any team would be eager to see what a top 10 pick can do out on the ice. they’ll have to wait a little bit longer for now. Reinbacher will miss the rest of training camp and be on the outside looking in once again for a spot on the Canadiens roster.
