March 17, 2024 by Last Word On Hockey

Martin St. Louis the Head Coach of the iconic Montreal Canadiens has stepped away from the club on leave for family reasons. This news is unexpected to the hockey community and we wish Marty all the best. Hopefully, he will not be away from the club for very long. Also, the announcement today addressed the role as Assistant Coach Trevor Letowski will fill in. Let’s take a look at the impact on Montreal.

Martin St. Louis On Leave with Club

At the time of the news, St. Louis was guiding his team to an overall record of 25-30-11. Furthermore, Montreal is 27th in goals for, and 28th in goals against. As strong as they can look during streaks, they are still entrenched in a rebuild. One thing is for certain, the Hall-of-Fame Right Winger has developed the Canadiens forward group as offensive stars. In addition, for St. Louis, he is in his third season behind the bench in La Belle Province. His combined winning percentage is .435.

What Does He Mean to the Canadiens

Having Martin St. Louis behind the bench in Montreal has been advantageous. Having a career 1033-point man solving the power play has had the desired effect of quickly developing the offensive skill set of their forward group. Furthermore, just check out the current roster to understand this impact. Nick Suzuki 62 points, Cole Caufield 52 points, Alex Newhook 22 points (in only 39 games). Moreover, another example is Sean Monahan’s 35 points, before his trade to the Winnipeg Jets. As you can see, he clearly gets the most offensively out of players. The difficult situation in Montreal is the state of the rebuild. Ultimately, they wanted to be competitive by around now. It is tough to know whether or not Montreal will make the 2024 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2024-25. Fans would tell you they need a goaltender.
