Habs Forward Leaves Game With Injury

September 29, 2024 by Last Word On Hockey

Montreal Canadiens forward Patrik Laine has left Saturday’s preseason contest against the Toronto Maple Leafs with an injury. It was tough to watch the hit on the play, but it didn’t look good for the Habs forward. Furthermore, the play occurred just moments after David Reinbacher had just left the game as well.

The 26-year old attempted to break into the offensive zone on a Montreal power play. Just after entering the zone, Laine took a knee-on-knee hit from Cedric Pare. Laine immediately fell to the ice and was grabbing his left knee. He then had to be helped off the ice by two teammates, keeping pressure off his left leg. Furthermore, as he made his way to the locker room, Laine was seen throwing off his helmet and gloves in frustration.

No penalty was called on the play. This perhaps inspired Arber Xhekaj to take matters into his own hands on his next shift. After unloading a vicious hit, Xhekaj was given a game misconduct. One can assume he will be receiving some form of discipline for the hit. Pare, on the other hand, did not appear to be have thrown a malicious hit on Laine, so it is unlikely he will be disciplined. However, Pare has quickly become public enemy number one in Montreal. Unfortunately, things like this happen in the game of hockey.

Scary Scene For New Hab

Laine was traded to the Canadiens over the summer after spending time in the player assistance program. The trade was scene as an opportunity for a fresh start for Laine. Likewise, the Habs, looking to turn things around themselves, were willing to take a chance on Laine, indicating the match was perfect.

Now, the city of Montreal and the Canadiens await word on Laine’s injury. Furthermore, the fact this happens against a longtime rival only adds salt to the wound.

Last Word On Hockey will provide updates as more information is made available. The latest update suggests that neither Laine nor Reinbacher will return to tonight’s action.
