25-Year Old Goaltender Traded to the Carolina Hurricanes

July 1, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

On Monday evening, the Carolina Hurricanes acquired goaltender Cayden Primeau from the Montreal Canadiens. In exchange for the 25-year old goaltender, the Habs have acquired a seventh-round pick in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft.

Primeau was the Habs seventh-round pick in the 2017 draft.

Primeau’s 2025

Primeau posted a 2-3-1 record alongside a 4.70 goals-against average and .836 save percentage in 11 games with the Canadiens last season. Primeau’s 11 games were 13 fewer than the previous season, a result of the deep Canadiens goaltending.

As a result, the Michigan native spent the majority of the season with the Laval Rocket in the American Hockey League, where he registered a 21-2-3 record to go with a 1.96 GAA and .927 SV% in 26 games. He also appeared in eight playoff games with the Rocket, posting a 3-4-0 record, 3.27 GAA and .878 SV%. Furthermore, Primeau won the 2025 Harry Holmes Memorial Award for the AHL Best Goaltending duo alongside teammate Connor Hughes.

Role with the Hurricanes

Primeau’s role with the Hurricanes is unclear. The Canes, coming off a trip to the Eastern Conference Final last season, are set to head into the 2025-26 season with Frederik Andersen in the starter’s net backed up by Pyotr Kochetkov. With both Andersen and Kochetkov on the roster, it seems there is no clear place for Primeau.

As a result, this could purely be a depth move by the Hurricanes. Considering the Canes only gave up a seventh-round pick, it appears they were just looking for someone to serve as the third goaltender on the depth chart.

However, this does not mean Primeau may not get an opportunity with the Hurricanes. Andersen has dealt with his fair share of injuries, so the Canes may be preparing for the possibility of another one.

Should Primeau get an opportunity, regardless of how he gets it, he will look to take advantage of it and put himself on the radar of the NHL.
